Bowman Geothermal Case Studies

Bowman Geothermal is recognized as a leader in the design and construction of geothermal systems and technologies throughout the region. To date, Bowman Geothermal has designed hundreds of systems for both residential and commercial uses.

A sampling of these projects include:

900 North Washington Street Condominiums, City of Alexandria, VA
On a large, triangular-shaped block of Alexandria's historic district, Bowman Geothermal designed, installed, and connected a vertical geothermal loop system for four residential condominium buildings. A total of 71 wells were drilled beneath the garage slab to provide heat exchange for 110 tons of total installed heating and cooling capacity for 56 condominium units, three townhouses, and circulations spaces throughout the buildings.

Ruxton Country School, Owings Mills, MD
A vertical geothermal system was installed for the new middle school on the campus of this small, independent school. Bowman Geothermal provided all services regarding the design, installation and connection of the loop to the facility.

Clearbrook VDOT Welcome Center, I-81, Winchester, VA
Bowman Geothermal designed a closed-loop geothermal system for this tourism welcome center which is expected to receive Silver LEED Certification. Bowman provided all services regarding the design, installation and connection of the loop to the facility.

Kramer Middle School, Ward 8, Washington, DC
Provided geothermal consulting services in the development and testing of the conceptual design for the proposed geothermal system. Bowman worked with the architect and mechanical engineer in a comprehensive effort to evaluate site geology and establish critical constraints specific to the design.

Powell Residence, Montgomery County, MD
Bowman Geothermal designed and installed a geothermal system for this 15,000 square foot residence. The closed loop system included 10 vertical wells drilled to over 450 feet and provided for future expansion of the structure.

US Food and Drug Administration Childcare facility,  Silver Spring, MD
The building loads consisted of approximately 70 tons of cooling and 770 MBH heating. The tasks for this project included thermal conductivity testing, as well as final engineering design of construction documents for the closed loop geothermal system.  Geothermal wells were designed to approximately 500 feet deep due to Bowman Geothermal’s analysis of the subsurface geological conditions.

Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indian Head, MD
Bowman Geothermal was tasked with Thermal Conductivity testing, final engineering design, design guidance, and installation of the closed-loop Geothermal system for both the Naval Surface Warfare Center and P-166 Laboratory Complex in Indian Head Maryland. This project included several major laboratory buildings on a campus setting. The ultimate design of this Closed loop geothermal system comprised of 90 wells at 400 feet deep to service the HVAC needs of the various buildings.

Packard Humanities Institute, Santa Clarita, CA
Bowman Geothermal analyzed the Packard Humanities Institute Film and Television Archives site for potential of geothermal as a means to reduce operating costs through available technology. Feasibility included reviewing the geology and hydrogeology for the Santa Clarita vicinity, recommending the most appropriate loop type and installation technology, optimized for the site’s geology, hydrology, and the building’s energy exchange requirements,  conducting life cycle cost analysis comparison, and finally drilling closed-loop test well and conducting a  Formation Conductivity/Borehole Thermal Performance test.

Wakefield High School, Arlington VA
Bowman Geothermal prepared preliminary analysis/design and constructed three geothermal test wells for the proposed new Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia.

Jefferson National Accelerator Laboratory- Newport News, VA
Bowman Geothermal prepared feasibility analysis, thermal conductivity testing, and final design documents for the new laboratory building.
